Harbourmaster Hotel, Aberaeron
It's no surprise that the Harbourmaster Hotel features prominently in Welsh tourism advertising. It's a handsome, brightly painted building in a picture postcard perfect location, an attractive image that's a must for any holiday brochure. But in this case, the looks are not deceiving and it is a pleasant surprise to find that what goes on inside, is as good as what goes on outside - and you don't have to be a resident to enjoy it. Lunchtimes and evenings, locals and visitors alike, gather in the large, contemporary-looking, bar (in the bit that looks like a shed), which serves a couple of decent, well-kept local ales on the hand pumps, bottles of Welsh cider and a nice range of wines and spirits. The polite, friendly, helpful and efficient service adds to the calm atmosphere of the bar. It's a place to relax, enjoy some good drink and good food (with the emphasis on local) and while away a few hours watching the harbour and enjoying conversation with friends and neighbours. Off-season, it's particularly relaxing, but even on a hectic summer Sunday, you get the impression the Harbourmaster could take it all in its stride.
