Almost hidden away in a row of shops containing a Chinese restaurant and a car showroom, and tucked under a red awning, is the Claret. Its north facing frontage lets in very little daylight and it can be dingy on the brightest summer day. It can be dire on a midweek afternoon, when a single drinker might find his only company a thirsty punter or two from the nearby betting shops and the TVs showing seemingly endless racing. The Claret livens up, however, in the evenings when its mixed bunch of mainly good nattered locals can fill it up, along with the many visitors it attracts for its unique selling point; five or six ever changing real ales and proper draught cider. Local real-ale enthusiasts rave about the beer here but, to this reviewer, some of the offerings can be a bit hit or miss. However, its evening popularity is undeniable and its up against little local competition. There is no food, apart from crisps and peanuts.
