The Cricketers is one of those Tudor-style roadhouse pubs that got thrown up between the wars, in the middle of the suburban housing boom that consumed areas like Shirley. Its got just one extensive bar area and its very much a locals pub, but not unwelcoming to strangers. In the last few years the Cricketers has tried to promote itself as a real-ale outlet and, when we went in, the couple of pints we had were better than good. They were also served up in oversized glasses, so there's never a need to ask for that top-up after short-measure. If only that was universal! There seems to be reasonably priced bar food on offer throughout the day, until 7.00 pm. And while kid friendly, parents seem to be encouraged to take their kids into the garden area at the back.
