The Cricketers has an ideal location as the first pub on the Addiscombe Road leading out of central Croydon. There's a pleasant enough patio area at its front, perfect for sitting out to watch the trams and the walking commuters pass you by. Inside, however, the first impression is one of neglect. Flaking paint, greasy seats and a sticky carpet tell of years of little investment. A shame really, as the assorted collection of old photos on the walls reveal the pub's part in a rural Croydon consumed by the town's expansion through the last century. The Cricketers has some interesting features; the back of the bar area drops away to another level and one half of the ceiling is timbered, probably denoting a historic split between the 'public' and the 'saloon'. Where money has been spent is on two large TVs, obviously intended for football, and on an array of lager siphons. These were doing their best to hide a single Fullers' pump, when we visited. The Pride inside was obviously well enough kept, but pricey for the area at £3.20. The locals are friendly and the staff are welcoming, but the general tackiness is just depressing. With a bit of care and attention the Cricketers could be a nice pub. As it is, you might want to drop in to interrupt a thirsty walk for a quick pint, but you probably wouldn't want to stay.

Went for a drink with a friend of mine last friday to this pub, looked ok from the outside but then looks can be deceiving, went in and ordered 2 glasses of a wine at £8 for the two, sat down, took two sips and yuk, it had a bad off taste, was from an already opened bottle, told the landlady but she is a real piece of work and insisted that it was ok, she argued with us and wouldnt change it and even wanted to charge us £8 for two new glasses of rose wine when we had only had a couple of sips out of our glasses, cheek! told her to stuff it, whatever happened to customer service??? cos there isnt any here in this pub, its a dump, dirty unkempt and needs work and the landlady clearly shouldnt be in her job and should go on a customer service course. The pub is a dive in comparison to many in Croydon, prices and choices are expensive and the decor and ambience needs some work on, including new management. If you want a bad night then maybe its for you, but if you want value for money dont go there.

How to find the Cricketers pub
From East Croydon station, turn left and follow the tram line east for five minutes. The pub is just next to Lebanon Road tram stop (if you're feeling lazy, you could get the tram one stop from East Croydon).
