Although rather enveloped by South Norwood and the outer reaches of Croydonia, Woodside Green still has signs of its village beginnings: a Green, a War Memorial, a caff and two pubs staring each other down from across the road. This feels the sort of community where you're either a regular of one pub or the other, tribal loyalty determining which one gets your vote. To the outsider though, there's not much of note at the Beehive. A bar light on beer, heavy on alcopops, dominated by screens for the football but with a grafted on conservatory to cope with the demand for food. On our visit at least it seemed as much creche as pub - 'family friendly', I suppose. No doubt a pub still at the heart of the community, though it seems more of a meeting place with the local hawker of DVDs than somewhere you'd actually go for a drink. We'll get round to the pub across the road (the Joiners Arms) next time we're down here.
