The Sandrock, Addiscombe
FancyaPint?'s review...
A 100 or so years ago this part of Croydon was a hive of rural industry with a brewery, a mill and the quarrying of sand. Yes you've guessed it, that's the origin of this unusual pub name. The industries have all gone of course and today the Sandrock is in one of the most affluent areas of Croydon but it hasn't turned into some yuppie gastro pub and, despite a recent makeover, it remains a good local. The Sandrock is an attractive late Victorian building which is now a comfortable one bar pub with the original front bar still very pubby with what was previously a rather drab rear saloon area having been transformed by the new owners into a very pleasant lounge area. There is also a small patio and garden. Not surprisingly, the food side of the trade is important and the menu offers an interesting contrast to the usual local pub grub. We also have it on good authority that the Sandrock offers the best Sunday roast of any Croydon pub. The locals are a really mixed crowd and perhaps not entirely what you would expect from the nature of the surrounding area. From our experience they are a friendly and mostly a down to earth bunch. The Sandrock is definitely one to watch, and the current management seem very much striving to improve it without losing its integrity as a proper pub. A pretty good mini crawl would be the Sandrock and "The Surprise" which is virtually opposite and if you are into that sort of thing a visit around the restored windmill as well.

The Sandrock has been recently taken over and refurbished. They now have a good range of well kept real ales. On a recent visit I sampled Spitfire & Wadworths 6X. They also do a lovely pint of Harveys Sussex and various other beers are often available. Food is on offer, but I have yet to sample it. The staff are polite and attentive. The garden area has been improved. Recommended for a good pint of real ale.
