Drunken Duck Inn, Ambleside
When we initially turned up at The Drunken Duck, our friend announced with disappointment, oh no, it's had a revamp! It had been a number of years since she'd been here and it had been give the old gastro-makeover and although we hadn't known it in its previous incarnation, we could certainly appreciate her disappointment. But, to our delight, the gastro-ness of its makeover was purely aesthetic (new sign, fancy paint colours, sturdy outdoor furniture etc). The bar-staff were all very friendly and there was a nice local atmosphere between them at the locals, whilst the hikers and bikers were greeted with equal warmth. One of the big draws about this place is that it's home to the Barngate brewery which is tucked into its shed out back. And the beers are excellent. They also have a fine choice of fizz with ciders and interesting lagers also available. We were here for lunch and had some spectacular steak & chips althought the bearnaise was a bit buttery (who's perfect, eh?). Unfortunately, we had to enjoy this inside as it was a lovely day and all of the picnic tables and outside seating were full with most people enjoying arguably the best view from a pub garden in existence, stretchign over Ambleside towards Lake Windermere with its surrounding fells. We'd recommend a night here so you can make a fuller examination of the brewery's beers without having to get a taxi home. This is certainly one of the exceptions in the world of gastro-pubbery.
