It’s a sign of the times that the latest update here has involved taking out the comfy seats and settees and replacing them with more sit-up-straight dining tables and chairs and sticking the staff in a new uniform complete with rather garish tie. Oddly the new menu - for a pub which now trades on its dining rather than its pubbing credentials – seems no more exciting than the old one. OK it’s cheap enough and everything seems fresh enough and wholesome enough but gastro-pub it’s not – more like canteen-pub. And who is it aimed at? The retired in these parts who make up a good part of the day time diners are hardly strapped for the odd pound or two while do the drinkers really want to feel they are just there on sufferance?
That said, there's an extensive range of draught beers and fancy lagers and the wine list is par for this course. There are gardens front and back with quality tables, chairs, awnings as necessary and a civilised view towards Ashtead Common. Staff are pleasant even if by some strange glitch in the space-time continuum, no matter how many are behind the bar or how few punters are on the other side it will always take that little longer than you feel it should to get fed or watered.

How to find the The Woodman pub
From Ashtead Station head into Ashtead up Woodfield Lane for a couple of hundred yards and turn right on Barnett Wood Lane to find the pub on your left after another couple of hundred yards. A diagonal footpath from the station car park also takes you right there.
