This part of Bedford is known as the Castle Road district, which derives its name from the long gone Bedford Castle. As such, a pub called the Castle perhaps has a lot to live up to. Certainly attractive from the outside, this is a decent Charles Well pub which caters well to the locals. It recently received a modernising makeover and consequently feels somewhat bland and out of keeping with the architecture. There is an acceptable choice of ale, but nowhere near the standard or choice of the nearby Wellington or Devonshire Arms. Still, there is a pleasant beer garden, friendly staff and occasional live music. In the face of stiff competition from a number of very good pubs, it perhaps doesn't hold up as an amazing place. Nonetheless, it is certainly competent in every area and worth including on some sort of Bedford Pub Crawl.
