A hotel in name only, the Queens Park (after the eponymous local park) is a welcome outpost in the Pokesdown area of Bournemouth. The approach from the town centre is via a seemingly endless, labyrinthine system of underpasses which eventually leads onto Holdenhurst Road. This is lined with adult bookstores, tattoo parlours, tanning studios and the like, but it leads eventually to leafy suburbia. The Queens Park is a decent place if from time to time you like your boozers a little on the scruffy side (as we do). The ale of choice is a well-casked Ringwood Best. Flowers IPA is also on offer. They sell old-fashioned pork scratchings and scampi fries too, which gets plus points. There are two distinct bars - a rather spartan public bar, and a much busier saloon bar with some children present as well as adults. Unusually, there are also two beer gardens: a smaller one to the side of the entrance (where we sat) and a larger, rowdier one out back. As we discovered later on, Bournemouth town centre has an astonishing lack of pubs. This one's out of the way, but it's worth popping into. However, opening times can be a bit irregular if AFC Bournemouth are at home, so check beforehand.

How to find the Queens Park Hotel pub

The nearest station is Pokesdown, around half a mile away. If coming on foot from Bournemouth Railway Station, head for Wessex Way (A338) and after just under a mile, you will reach a roundabout with Holdenhurst Road as the right turn.
