The Axe and Compasses, sat in the pretty village of Braughing, is one of those country pubs which received a vaguely upmarket refurbishment and moved the focus onto serving food, presumably to attract more custom. The interior is nice enough, with some heavy original beams and a couple of real fires sat against more modern furniture. The back area seems more focussed on eating while the front was the more popular on our visit. There's a couple of good ales to choose from and service was efficient, if somewhat unenthusiastic. You'll find a few seats out front, but we preferred the grassed back area behind the car park, where it would seem an outside bar opens up during more clement weather. If we're in the area again we'll try the food (be warned: it's not cheap), but until then the Axe and Compasses receives a solid three pint rating.
