The Apple, Bristol
FancyaPint?'s review...
Apples are great - you can put them in pies, they make great computers, they keep the doctor away and, crucially, you can make them into refreshing brews. And here at the Apple it's that last point that's celebrated - and celebrate it they do. There's an awe-inspiring and challenging range of cider and cider-related drink, including fortified stuff and spirits (over 40 varieties at the last count). For us, the draft ciders are the ones to go for, there's an ever-changing selection and you're pretty much guaranteed to come across something you haven't tried before. There is a small selection of beer and wine, for those not up to a challenge, but if that's what you fancy, what on earth are you doing here? So excited are we about the selection, we forgot to mention that the Apple is a converted barge on the canal, comprising a main bar, in what was the hold and a tented, upper deck where, thanks to heaters it's pleasant even in winter and for summer there's additional seating on the quayside. Service is fast and friendly, but it can get busy, especially on a warm Friday in summer. We like it so much, we're thinking of borrowing a tugboat and a tow rope to move the Apple closer to home.
