The Llandoger Trow is a striking, old, vast, half-timbered pub in the historic centre of Bristol. Taking it's name from a type of boat once built not too far away, the Llandoger Trow dates from the 1660's. It looks like a Hollywood concoction, but it's genuine enough (now the WWII bomb damage has been fixed) and it's a grade II* listed pub. It's in a touristy area, surrounded by hotels from where, consequently, it draws its clientele. And, for us, this is the problem - despite the decent beer on the hand pumps and the grand interior with its fantastic fireplaces, wooden floorboards, oak beams and wooden furniture, it's a pub that lacks atmosphere, it feels like a middle-rank hotel in fancy dress. The lighting doesn't help - it's over-bright and unsubtle - and where you'd expect to find cosy nooks and crannies to while away an hour or two with friends, you'll find the decks have been cleared, it seems, in order to pack the punters in. The quirkily-named rooms, bars and restaurants only add to the sense of cynical sales promotion and the service, whilst polite enough, isn't that enthusiastic. It's a pity, but, here in the UK, we rarely seem to be able get the balance right when it comes to this sort of pub - there are numerous, similar examples all over the country. By all means pop in here and admire the grand old place, but if you're looking for a cosy pub for a few jars with friends, without the irritation of gaggles of garrulous gawpers and popping flashguns as yet another picture is taken of a yet another group by the fireplace, we suggest you seek an alternative.
