Considering how attractive a town like Buxton is, there's a surprising lack of real, quality pubs. Many have had unfavourable refurbishments, while others seem to aim for the vertical drinking demographic. As such, the Sun Inn is as close to a proper pub as you'll find. Clearly an old pub, inside it's a surprisingly large place, decorated in fairly simple style, with an emphasis on wood - some of the area dividers are made out of old numbered doors, for example. There's lots of small rooms around the massive central bar and enough nooks and crannies to hide yourself away. Service is pleasant enough, and the staff managed to keep their cool, despite how busy it was on our visit. And, there's a very good selection of real ales to choose from. If you're looking for the best pub Buxton has to offer, the Sun Inn - along with the Swan over the road - is one of the highlights.
