Canton RFC, Cardiff
FancyaPint?'s review...
Not a pub, granted, but if you are ever in the vicinity of the new Cardiff City Stadium for rugby, football or otherwise, we can heartily recommend a visit just round the corner to this little rugby club with a long and proud history dating back to 1877 (it's one of the oldest amateur clubs in Wales). The Clubhouse is at least the equal of several local pubs, not all of which are overly welcoming of English visitors, it must be said. In contrast, Canton RFC welcomes non-members and serves a very good selection of beers from the local Brains brewery. Visiting with a Cardiffian on his recommendation, we found that the bar had the standard Brains Bitter, plus Dark (which is our pick of the stable) and SA, as well as IPA, and you won't have to fork out much more than £2 for a pint. Don't be put off by the entrance: local graffiti artists have done their worst. Inside, you will find a quintessential Welsh rugby club, warm and inviting. Opening times are a little erratic, depending on when games/training are scheduled, but Saturday afternoons will invariably find its doors open, and they have regular entertainment on a Saturday night. It's worth a look if you are passing.
