The Maen Llwyd (meaning "grey stone") Inn is located in picturesque rural surrounds in the village of Rudry near Caerphilly, north of Cardiff. Right away you get a feel for the place: the walk from the car park takes in a view of a nearby valley, with sheep grazing on the slopes. The beer patio is positioned to enjoy this splendid view, and it's well worth taking a moment to have a look. The building itself is late seventeenth century, originally a farmhouse, and those who are vertically blessed will need to stoop when passing through doorways. The smell of the open fire hits you straightaway - old romantics will love it, and well-behaved children are welcome too. The pub is in both the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and the Guardian gastro guide, and although the food is not cheap, it's very good: they specialise in game and pork, but the menu is plentiful and there are many specials available (though the choice is strictly limited for vegetarians) with roasts on offer also in the early afternoon on a Sunday. It's sensible to arrive early, especially at weekend lunchtimes, as you can't book. The only mild disappointment was the beer: it was, relatively speaking, pretty good (London Pride, Landlord and a couple of decent guest bitters from the West Country), but in such pleasant surroundings some good Welsh ales would undoubtedly elevate the pub to the magic five pints.

How to find the Maen Llwyd Inn pub

From Cardiff Central take a train to Caerphilly, and from Caerphilly Interchange take bus service "J" to Rudry (though it's best to check times, especially in the evenings and at weekends). This should take around 90 minutes with good connections. If driving, Rudry is around 9 miles from Cardiff, and plentiful free off-road parking is available near the pub.
