Barley Mow, Chesterfield
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Barley Mow is the nearest pub to Chesterfield Football Club's antiquated Recreation Ground, which is (at least until early 2009 when the club is scheduled to move to a new ground) one of the oldest English league football grounds in continuous use, dating back to 1871. We were up for a game, wanting to check out the old gaff before it shut and, unsurprisingly, the Barley Mow was jam-packed with pre-match drinkers. In contrast to many football pubs, however, you can just tell that this is a pleasant little pub worth a visit in its own right. The locals are unfailingly polite, away fans and neutrals are welcomed with smiles, and the pub is renowned for employing fair-faced local lasses. The choice of ale is acceptable, too, if not brilliant. But it's the exterior of the pub which is particularly attractive and, come rain, shine, blow or snow, seems to say "welcome". Let's hope this little tavern doesn't lose too much of its essence when the local team moves to pastures new.
