The Cricketers, Clavering
FancyaPint?'s review...
Die-hard fans of the cheeky cockney chef, Jamie Oliver know he cut his cooking teeth in the kitchen of his mum and dad's pub in Essex - and this is it. While we're not necessarily fans of the celebrity chef on a mission, his influence has not had a detrimental effect on this place. We weren't there because of him, we'd gone out to the country for a nice Sunday dinner and that's what we got. It was more than nice, but then, at these prices that's hardly surprising. All the veg comes from Jamie's organic garden and most of the produce is as local as you can get. There wasn't a complaint from any of our party and with decent beer on the taps, Green King's new St Edmunds, as well as Adnams, and they were very well kept. It's very popular on a Sunday and, perhaps unsurprisingly, all the tables were set for lunch. The handful of people who were just drinking at the bar seemed a bit awkward, but nobody seemed to mind much. We have it on good authority that the emphasis is less on food during the week, and we're going to have to come back and try it, as any pub that has a "pie night" is more than all right in our book. We don't want to keep going on about the celebrity tie, but it's a bit hard to get away from - particularly as, if you haven't got a signed copy of Jamie's latest book, you can get one as you come in the door. Still a cracking place.
