An old suburban boozer, now home to the only pub in London owned by the Hopback Brewery. It's a pub that plays to its strengths - the beer. A pint here and you may well have a Damascene conversion to real ale. Two pints and you'll be talking about "hoppy aromas" and "malty flavours". It's a place harking back to pubs of the past. No sign of a TV (if there is one it wasn't on) and bar food only at lunchtimes. There's also a back bar for darts (with a photo of Andy "The Viking" Fordham next to the board). But the main activity of the punters here (mostly chaps of an age to have seen National Service) is for a couple of beers and a natter. Even if you're south of the river it feels a stretch to get here, but give it a look if you can (pints down to 1.50 on Wednesday nights). Some surprise this was named "Time Out Best Pub 2004", and in most respects a solid three pinter, this one edges a four rating through the sheer quality of its beer.

Nice pub, old feel, good beer. They have a festival in the summer where you can try loads of beers. A shady garden, lots of locals, no loud music or interfering telly. In short, you go there to have a draught ale and talk - what a pub ought to be!

Warm welcome, friendly and chatty locals. The ales are kept very well and wednesday evenings are still cheap (£2.10/pint rather than the usual but very reasonable £2.65). Garden is spacious and well maintained plus a suntrap i'm lead to believe. Not a yuppie business-luncher in sight. Well worth dropping by!
