Cock Inn, Colney Heath
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Cock in the small village of Colney Heath is an archetypal freehouse of the sort rapidly vanishing, but one ultimately worth 20 bland chain pubs. Having been in the same family for over 40 years, there is a lived-in and welcoming feeling. There are two bars, both cosy and inviting, festooned with local photos - the lounge features fascinating shots of Romany gypsies who camped in the nearby fields until the 1950's, while the saloon contains snaps taken at the same time of local amateur football teams and those coach day trips which were popular at the time. There is also a heavy cockerel theme, with many china figurines around the bar. There were three well-kept ales during our visit, including Wadworth 6X and a guest, while the simple food (jacket potatoes, sandwiches etc) is very cheap and tasty. It's not promoted however, as they are keen to retain the feel of a proper pub, where chatting with the local folk is an easy pleasure. On a final note, we saw the landlord pop across the road with a plate of food for a local elderly resident on our lunchtime visit; we'd like to see the duty assistant manager of a local Wetherspoon do that. This is the kind of authentic community pub that cannot be replicated or manufactured, so is worthy of as much support as possible.
