The Crooked Billet looks very much like an archetypal old country pub - the kind you can imagine seeing in photos from days gone by where nothing but the sign has changed since. Inside is also fairly unmolested, with a number of small, wooden framed rooms. There are a trio of ales to choose from, including a choice from Hertfordshire brewer Tring and plenty of food - all served to a mixed group of locals and regulars by friendly staff. Add to this an enormous grassed beer garden, complete with views over farmland, and it all sounds rather idyllic. Strangely - and sadly - this pub isn't quite the sum of its parts. It all feels somewhat disjointed and all those rooms feel mildly claustrophobic, rather than cosy. We recall too much tat adorning the walls, along with an unnecessary fruit machine near the already tiny bar. It is still worth a visit if you find yourself in the area, but we generally prefer the Cock just up the road.
