The New Goth is doubtless the best-known pub in the former mining village of Cowdenbeath in west Fife. While such a boast may be relative, this curiously-named establishment has occupied a place in the consciousness of town visitors for years. This is due largely to the fact that it's the nearest pub to a train station which witnesses a (minor) invasion every other Saturday from August to May from away supporters in the Scottish football league - Cowdenbeath's Central Park ground is very close by. Despite the name (and we have no idea why it's so called, or why the word "Gothenburg" appears on the frontage), the New Goth is not at all dominated by black eyeliner, purple lipstick and sallow complexions. In fact, it's more knock-down-juice than Beetlejuice, the prices set at a quite frankly irresponsibly low one pound-ish for a shot of vodka, and barely two pounds for a pint of lager - as is often the case in Scotland, several varieties of McEwan's are on offer, amongst other draught lagers. Not the cleanest pub in the world - the optics were dusty and we have heard of the odd dirty glass, and in all honesty a bit of a dive, but quite friendly and unloutish, with a largish main bar and a fair amount of seating (mostly on long settees). There's a separate pool room as well. Go on, we defy you not to be intrigued enough to pop in, should you be in town.
