Tatsfield is a charming, hilly village, located on the edge of the scenic North Downs, and one of the most isolated settlements anywhere within the M25, let alone accessible by London bus. The Old Ship is a welcoming place, with a few good beers on hand pumps, a wide selection of food (variants on traditional pub dishes, mostly), a grand beer garden at the back, with some seats outside at the front, too, overlooking the village green and duck pond. As one of the principal social centres in the village, the Old Ship seems to cater for various tastes, with both a forthcoming karaoke evening and a jazz/blues concert in the pub being advertised when we visited (There's a piano in the corner, too). Our only qualms about this place would be with some elements of the decor - there's a bit too much beige, frankly. Otherwise, great.

If you time it right, this is a 40-minute journey from Croydon. Get the tram (Route 3) to the end of the route, New Addington, and then take bus 464 from a bus stop by the tram terminus to the end of its route, opposite the pub. This bus runs every half-hour, seven days a week, until just after midnight.
