The Palace Bar is an elegant, atmospheric place despite its proximity to the tourist magnet of Temple Bar. With mirrored snob screens at the bar, and the landlord in shirt and tie, the pub feels like to it belongs to an older era. The back room is handsome too with its stained glass skylight, armchairs lining the walls and pictures of Joyce, Beckett and that sort of thing. Racing on the TV and hushed conversations complete the picture. Dating from 1843, the Palace has survived remarkably over time. It was long the boozer of choice for thirsty Irish Times journos, frequented by Brian O'Nolan (that's Flann O'Brien to you) and the like. Recommended.
