This JDW is Arbroath's only entry in the "Good Beer Guide", which is rather unfair given several other worthy alehouses we visited on our visit. To be fair, the Corn Exchange is one of the more pleasant Wetherspoons we've been in. It's an enormous building - no explanation is needed as to its genesis. We understand that it was built in the mid-19th century to ease the congestion of traders' stalls in the town centre, although how on earth they managed to fit the building into this corner of Market Square is beyond us: it was all we could do to get far away enough from the entrance to get a half-decent photo. Apparently it turned out to be something of a white elephant, and had various subsequent uses before reopening as a pub in 2001. As usual, the beer is good - Greene King IPA, Abbott, Old Speckled Hen - though a lack of Scottish ale is disappointing. It's such a large building that it feels like two or three pubs in one, and this doesn't help the atmosphere, though it is comfortable and relaxing. It's worth a visit, if only to be impressed by the architecture.

How to find the Corn Exchange pub

From Arbroath railway station, head left down West Port and take the third left (Millgate). Turn right when Millgate meets the A92, then left up Gravesend. Market place is the narrow cut-through to the High Street (10-15 minutes' walk). 2. Cross the A92 and turn left. Take a first right onto Lordburn, then a second right onto the High Street. Head right down the High Street and the pub is down near the harbour (approx. 20 minutes' walk).
