You don't often find pubs this gorgeous in a college town. While students from the nearby University of Dundee do come in, there's a mixed crowd of all ages. A former bank building, the Trades House got an authentic Victorian makeover in 1997, complete with crown mouldings, plaster medallions, etched glass, marble tables and gargoyles (which are not Victorian, but we like them anyway). Large stained glass windows depict traditional trades, hence the name. It's one large rectangular room with the corners gated off into "snugs" for diners and the centre left open for drinkers. It can get quite loud when sports fans crowd in to watch football and rugby on three large screens. One screen is just over the ornate stairway leading to the toilets so it may seem (particularly if you're pissed) as if you have a large, intent audience watching you heed nature's call.
