Perched next to (what remains of) the Castle Keep and the High Level Bridge, it's no surprise that when the sun shines, there's a race here to grab the seats on the terrace overlooking the Tyne. We stuck to the interior though, rather marvelling at a pub with a rather classic interior: wood panelling, touches of stained glass and tucked away corners. It's a rather sizeable place too, so can handle big crowds (and has enough screens to cover the football) and is also big on its comedy nights (meaning professional acts, rather than bantering locals). The lengthy bar affords enough space for plenty of ales and judging by our visit, the service from the staff is pretty decent too. We've long noticed this pub from the train whilst heading through Newcastle and long wondered what it was like inside: having now been, we can safely say it's well worth checking out if you're visiting the area.
