Argyle Bar, Edinburgh
Small, lively and friendly local that seems to serve a range of Marchmont dwellers about as well as it has for years. Despite a high student quota, it's ideal for a quiet chat and snifter and everyone seems to rub along all right. The days when Quixote popped in for a swift gallon have long gone as has the downstairs bar where the students partitioned themselves, and in doing so it has lost a bit of character. Still, the service is reliable, as is the beer (although there was just Deuchars on pump on our last visit) with Guiness, Belhaven and Tenants on tap. Good range of whiskeys. All told, clean and jolly enough if your handy for it. Open to 1am.
