This is an amazing building, constructed on piles in the water at the shore of the Firth of Forth – sitting in the big, north facing virtually full-length picture window is not recommended for those prone to seasickness. The grey sea (it’s always grey in these parts) grumbles away beneath while the views across to Fife can be stunning given the right weather conditions. As well as the biggish, elegantly nautically-themed open bar, at one end a few steps up or a few steps down provides secluded alcoves for those who want a little more privacy.
Food and drink veers towards the up market while being nothing special and probably marginally more expensive than it merits. OK this reviewer should allow a bias from the various rites of teenage passage he experienced in this place decades ago now, but you don’t come here just for the beer or the food. It’s smarter, tidier – probably a heck of a lot safer nowadays – but the atmosphere is still there.
