Forest Gate Inn, Epping (Village)
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Forest Gate Inn is a pub of old; no jukebox here, or fruit machines - just the gentle murmur of idle chat. Being (we believe) an Adnam's pub, there's naturally a couple of ales served by a genial landlord, while you can either enjoy the grassed front garden, or perhaps peruse the books for sale and settle down in a corner for an evening of uninterrupted relaxation. The lunchtime menu is small but perfectly formed and we plumped for an excellent, reasonably priced (and getting-hard-to-find) ploughman's lunch. This is what the Flask in Highgate could be like if it didn't suffer from crowds of annoying people. All this nostalgia comes a price, however, as you need to watch out for retro-style opening hours; we've passed on sunny, customer attracting weekend afternoons after 3pm and seen it closed.

Easily the best pub in the area - great beer, good basic grub, mixed clientelle, friendly welcoming landlord and staff and mobile phones not allowed in the bar! Don't leave without a marrow or a pound of tomatoes.

We arrived here at 3.10 on a Saturday afternoon, before a walk with our dog in Epping Forest as we had read the pub was dog-friendly. Unfortunately friendly is not really a word that can be used in conjunction with this pub in any way whatsoever. ´We´re closed´an angry red faced man with an caterpillar moustache barked at us, just as we were opening the door. Dog friendly? How can they be when they cant even be people friendly. Avoid.

How to find the Forest Gate Inn pub
Bit of a walk this one. From Epping tube exit left onto Station Road and left again onto Centre Drive. At the end turn right onto Ivy Chimneys Road and then turn right onto Theydon Road where you'll soon see the pub. There are also footpaths which lead to close to the pub which could make the journey quicker.
