Brewery Tap, Ferneux Pelham
According to the information map next to the bus stop there used to be numerous pubs and even a brewery in the village of Ferneux Pelham. Now there's just one - the Brewery Tap. Now a large Greene King pub, it's clean and tidy but relatively unmodernised - the last refurb looks like it was done sometime in the late 90s. Our Sunday visit found a small band of regulars around the bar and service was cheerful enough. Being the lone surviving pub it seems to play a strong community role, with pool, darts, golf and cricket teams being linked with the pub. Food is served at lunch time and in the evening, with prices ranging from £7.95 for Ham, Double Egg & Chips to £15 for an 8oz Sirloin Steak, while a couple of Greene King ales is as exciting as it got on the drinks front. The standout feature, however, is the lovely beer garden. Complete with trees, lawns, mature boarders and a fountain, it puts other places to shame. There's even a kid's play area set back from the main garden. You might not be wowed by the Brewery Tap but it's a good pub for the locals and anyone wanting to stop off for a drink and bite to eat in this attractive part of Hertfordshire.
