Whether you've half an hour or half a day to wait in the purgatory on Earth that is Gatwick airport, you'll want to find the most appealing pub (or least appalling) in which to while away your last minutes in Blighty. Don't be lured early to the satellite gates. We've seen people cry when they realise they were duped into a one-way misery parade, especially smokers. The metro bar offers a ray of hope, plus drinks and snacks. Install yourself here and if not exactly ecstatic, you can be sure you're happier than 99% of your fellow travellers. There's Stella and Boddies, though the Murphy's doesn't sell enough to risk. The staff can do a terrific bloody mary and claim to be open 24 hours a day. You even get to see planes take off and land. Just keep your expectations reasonable and don't tell anyone. If a queue forms, we're all buggered.
