Reviewing a new pub can be akin to reviewing a work of art, or a piece of literature (well, that's our excuse anyway) in that one may feel swayed by pressure into giving the object of the review glowing praise due to existing reputation. Or the opposite. Occasionally, a pub has no wider reputation at all. The Grove falls into this latter category. The fifth pub on a five-pub tour of some of the locals in the City/near West End, we discovered we had unwittingly saved the best for last. So much fun was had that an intended quick-pint-before-bed became four. A genuine local in a fairly touristy part of Glasgow, the Grove attracts all sorts from students, OAPs in wheelchairs, mutton-dressed-as-lamb on a night out to jovial, quick-witted middle-aged Weegie blokes, and all of the above engaged us in endearing conversation. Special mention must go to "Glesca Jimmy", a forty-something local and sometime-promising young footballer with Partick Thistle before he discovered "beer, fags and burdz", and who insisted on buying his English visitor two pints - which were, it is understood, reciprocated - before staggering off in search of the "bright lights". Sometimes you just have to go on your experiences - and we had a lovely end of evening.
