Snaffle Bit, Glasgow
Don't ask us the reasons behind the equestrian name for this boozer in the Kelvingrove area on the edge of Glasgow's West End - we have no idea. Location-wise, it's handy enough (it's hemmed in by several pleasant hotels and b&b's, plus Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a stone's throw away) but whilst fairly busy, it didn't exude a lot of warmth. That despite being established for over 40 years and apparently being something of a haven for visitors from the Western Isles. Divided into what are effectively saloon and public bars - both of which seemed equally noisy - it's not the kind of place you can sit in alone and read a book or the paper in peace. On the plus side, they appear to have regular live music at the weekend (the band were warming up as early as 4pm on our visit) but the beer (Belhaven) was mediocre and pretty expensive as Glasgow pubs go. Perhaps we caught the Snaffle Bit on an-off day, but even if we had been able to find a seat in either the lounge or the bar, the outside seating proved preferable.
