The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Great Langdale
The ODG is one of three pubs at the head of the Langdale valley and our firm favourite of the pack. The Hiker's Bar is a simple affair; several battered old tables that bear the scars of many a hikers knife are arranged in booths, or next to the ginormous fire place - the perfect place to warm mountain-weary feet and dry out snow-logged boots. If you can bag the seat next to the fire, you won't be getting out of it for some time. Typically, pictures of local fells and those who trod them adorn the walls and there's not much more to it than that. On the pumps - the many, many pumps - is an ever-changing range of beers local, and not so local. On our last visit following a jaunt over Esk Pike, Allan Crag and Bowfell it was Old Peculiar that did the magic together with the best pie we've ever come across. They really don't mess about with their food and they know their clientele - the fish and chips came with two bits of fish. Two. Brilliant. There's lots to love about this pub inside and out. The view from the beer garden toward the Langdale Pikes has to rank as one of the best in the land. A wondrous place and a wondrous boozer.
