One of those pubs we have known about for years - but never got round to visiting until recently - the Royal Oak has experienced mixed fortunes in its time but is now regarded as one of the better places to eat out in the area, especially on a Sunday. Its location, on raised ground straddling the boundary between the London Borough of Bromley and Kent, plus its distinctive appearance (it boasts a mock oast house of the type more frequently seen further into Kent) mean that it's hard to miss. Vintage Inns have placed the emphasis on dining - on a Sunday it's reservations-only. Children are welcomed, even the very young. The beer was decent enough, with Harveys Best being the pick of the two or three draught ales available. The food wasn't the worst either, la carte although we found the roast chicken disappointing (little or no veg, meat not tender). The table service was polite, if slightly unpolished (note to attractive young waitress - if, at what is obviously a family celebration, a guest queries the fact you have brought the wrong colour wine, you change it without challenging them - this blotted an otherwise impressive copybook). That said, it is one of the better places to dine out on a Sunday lunchtime in the Orpington area. And, refreshingly, the old-school pint drinkers don't appear to have been forced out even when it's otherwise packed for Sunday lunch.

Nice pub, shame about the food. OK I booked 9 for Mothers' day & was seated at an 8 people table, despite my amending the booking by ‘phone several days earlier. Now I know everywhere is very busy on Mothers' day (which is why we book right?) so having a few extra staff on hand might be a good idea right? Wrong. Starters arrived in a reasonable time & were pretty good. Mains were another story, it took 40 minutes to bring (most of us ordered) a ‘roast beef’ Sunday lunch. It arrived luke-warm, swimming in a strong tasting gravy, which I’m guessing was designed to mask the tough meat, semi-raw roast potatoes, a rock hard Yorkshire pudding & a few mushy overcooked vegetables. The sweet was fine & we paid & left. Just because ‘it’s Mothers’ day’ & ‘we’re busy’ is absolutely no excuse for serving, not inexpensive, poor quality, cold food. Staff were good but overworked & ‘tired’, we waited for the obligatory ‘was everything alright..’ to give our opinion, but this seems to have been missed off the training ½ hour. Not going back.
