The bar at the Merton Hotel is often one of the quieter places to drink on Commercial Road, but we think it compares favourably with other nearby options. It is simply furnished, yet welcoming, and offers two ales from the local Wye Valley Brewery for your delectation. The excellent value two-course lunch deal at £6.95 is served well into the afternoon, while the restaurant menu is also available here. For those arriving in the city by bus or train it should be one of the first drinking establishments they spot, and for locals is perfect for a pre-cinema pint or the start of a crawl if they catch happy hour.

The Merton is handily placed opposite the bus station, while from the train station head left onto Commercial Road then turn right -- following the outside of the Morrisons car park. The Merton is less than five minutes walk.
