Kingston-upon-Hull has had its share of bad press, but is now firmly on the up thanks to town-centre development and the success of its sports teams. Dating from the 1550s, and essentially unchanged since, this lovely city-centre boozer is a little reminiscent in interior style of Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in London's Fleet Street, but with a lot less segregation and a far warmer atmosphere. It attracts a notably mixed clientele, from octogenarians to eighteen-year-olds. The seeds of the English Civil War are said to have been sown in the "Plotting Parlour" upstairs, when King Charles was barred from Hull (and which we understand may be hired for small private functions). The delightful garden (pictured) has won awards in the annual "Hull in Bloom" competition. A slightly more eclectic choice of guest ale would surely elevate the pub to the magic five "pints" (it is a tied pub). But otherwise, superb. Well worth a visit - and check out the unidentified skull behind the saloon bar. Note that as is common in the North, food is served only at lunchtime (12-2).
