Leicestershire brewer Everards usually run pretty good pubs: though not necessarily outstanding, they usually cover the bases well. However to find a five pint rated example one, you have to go out to the tiny village of Illston on the Hill. On a road with no through traffic and sat next to the 13th century St Michael and All Angels Church the Fox and Goose looks very much like its housed in a tiny converted cottage. It's a two room affair, with the back offering a homely interior, the walls festooned with ornaments and pictures. The front is a little more tidy but has a bijou bar in the corner and a wood burning stove which fills the room with that unmistakable smell - think of your gran's front room with a licensed bar. At the bar you'll be offered an extensive range of Everards beer along with a warm and hospitable welcome by the landlady. Sitting out the front in the summer sun watching the horses in the field opposite is as pleasant as setting down inside on a cold a rainy winter's night. We omitted to find out if they serve food, but if they could knock up a ploughman's lunch (or something equally appropriate), this would be a perfect pub.
