A sign outside advertises this place as the home of Old Peculiar; that's as good a reason to visit. There's more to it than that though: in such a heavily touristed area it has the real of a proper - as opposed to ersatz or twee - old school pub with a suitably unreconstructed decor. There's local real ales (as well as the, rather good, Old P), hearty food (the management boasts that they've kept the same pot of goulash on the go for years - thanks to regular top-ups, obviously) and a few nice touches such as dog food on sale and a holes in the wall were you can stuff money for the mountain rescue service. Essentially, it's just the sort of thing you want pre, post or mid-walk or if you're seeking a refuge from the coach parties and tea shops that infest the Lake District.

Generally, this is the perfect place to retire for a good pint of real ale after a day on the fells. A very cosy and friendly ambience indeed.

The Dog and Gun is very dog friendly; in fact at one point there seemed more dogs in the pub than people! Sometimes the relaxing feel is a little dissipated by lots of barking and growling. Nevertheless, it's a fine pub.

The Strange Torpor.
