The Three Mariners, Lancaster
FancyaPint?'s review...
After a long train journey, it's good to find a decent place for a pint. The Three Mariners isn't the closest pub to Lancaster station but it's certainly worth bypassing the other pubs for. Despite it being surrounded by a multi-storey car-park and blocks of apartments, this little oasis is a well-preserved bit of history in this slowly-gentrifying city. The building goes back to the 13th century and the 8 centuries have created a great atmosphere. The pub has a gravity-fed, 1st floor 'cellar', blackened oak beams and the landlord took great pride in telling us about the pub's very own resident ghost who frequents the toilets! Spooks aside, the pub had a lively collection of older locals, plenty of choice on the pumps (both local and mainstream) and local free-range hens eggs for sale behind the bar (unusual for a city pub). There's a weekly quiz on Thursdays, Darts 'n' dominoes on Tuesdays and a fruit machine if that presses people's buttons. The food looked pretty good value and if we'd been a couple of months later, there's a chance that they would have had the fire going.
