At the edge of the nicer part of Leicester City Centre - just before you get to the usual dual carriageway related mistakes of 1960s town planning - lies the Criterion. An ugly box of a building, it looks like a post war public toilet, with cream tiling and a back street location. Cast all this aside though, as inside is a jolly good pub. Simply but comfortably laid out, there are two bars to choose from. One is festooned with beer mats - indicating their commitment to serving some excellent real ales - and this is where you can also hear the regular live music. If the hunger pangs start to bite, there are pizzas on offer and if you fancy a challenge, the Tuesday pop quiz is apparently pretty good. It can get very busy at the more obvious times, but the Criterion goes to show you can't always judge a book by it's cover.

How to find the The Criterion pub

From Leicester station, exit right, cross over and follow the road down Granby Street, which eventually becomes pedestrianised. The 7th turning on the left should be Horsefair Street, which segues into Millstone Lane. Follow it round and the the pub will soon appear on the right.
