The Brewers Arms is an attractive, two-bar pub in the historic centre of Lewes, surrounded by boutiques, antique bookstores and spires. We are informed that the current incarnation dates to 1906, but that an inn has stood on this site for over 400 years. It's a free house, and there's always a decent selection of changing guest ales: indeed, forthcoming offerings are posted on the pub's web site. Naturally, given we are in Lewes, Harveys Best (together with Harveys Southdown Harvest) is the main regular bitter on offer. They also have Biddenden Dry on tap for cider lovers. The front bar tends to be frequented by older couples, especially those dining, whilst the back bar offers Sky Sports, a pool table and darts. "Toad in the hole", the traditional East Sussex pub game, is played here as well. From the back bar, a small staircase leads out to a pleasant, if small-ish, beer patio. The Brewers also has a good reputation for home-made food, served daily until 18h45 although we didn't try it. Overall, a jolly decent pub, although we were just a touch disappointed as we had been expecting to discover something unusually charming and intimate, from what we had read and heard. Perhaps we're just romantic fools...

Alighting from Lewes railway station, turn right out of the main entrance and follow the road (B2193) uphill until the junction with the High Street. Turn left into the High Street, and the pub is on the left-hand side after a couple of hundred yards.
