Wood Street leading away from High Barnet is an attractive area, complete with alms houses, little parks, old Churches and attractive looking pubs. One of these is the Alexandra. Inside it's a small, wonderfully unmodernised pub, complete with a fireplace, beams and wood panelling. Shame then that it gets a one pint rating. Our Sunday night visit found it with a male to female ratio of about 10-1 and judging by all the stares as we ordered our beer, everyone knew we weren't regulars at this particular establishment. The football on TV (hence all the men, we guess) was ridiculously loud for such a small pub and after the final whistle a repeat of 'Only Fools and Horses' was pointlessly allowed to carry on at the same shout-to-be-heard volume. A lot of good things could be done with this pub, especially as its interior is pretty much intact; with just a bit of effort from the owners and regulars this could easily achieve a higher rating.

How to find the Alexandra pub

From High Barnet tube, either catch one of the buses or walk up the hill and take the left hand fork when you reach Barnet Church onto Wood Street. Walk down for a few minutes and shortly passed the mini-roundabout the pub is on the left.
