In our previous review, we'd remarked on the cyclic nature of the Approach Tavern's personality, swinging between a jolly nice place for drink, food and convivial conversation, to a dodgy den of iniquity - and this has gone on for decades. On our last visit, it was once again on the slippery slope and once more becoming a pretty unpleasant experience for the average punter - so much so, even we had stayed away for a couple of years. However, the rumour mill intimated that the Approach was on the upturn, so we ventured in to have another look. Well, we're happy to say the rumours are true, the management have taken the pub in hand and it's once again a decent pub. The beer's pretty good, in fact the Gale's HSB was so good, we ended up staying for rather longer than we intended, the food is much improved (there were plenty of people popping in for a bite) and the atmosphere far more friendlier and hospitable than it had been of late. Like it's sister pub up the road, the Approach Tavern is now back on our list of regular haunts - well done to Remarkable Restaurants Group for turning it around. POSTSCRIPT: it may not yet be back to how it used to be in the good old days. On our last (Monday night) visit, service was diabolical, taking ten minutes to get one drink when the pub was almost empty. The bar person busy talking to another customer, who seemed to believe he was a 'character" and the pub a better place for his presence. It's this kind of crap that kept us and others out of this pub (we left, for another nearby pub). Please sort it out, the Approach deserves better.

Leave Bethnal Green Tube and head up Cambridge Heath Road until you get to the toy museum. Turn right along Old Ford Road, walk past York Hall and carry on until you get to the junction with Approach Road on your left. Walk up Approach road for a short while and you should see the pub on your left.
