Barley Mow, Marylebone
FancyaPint?'s review...
Over three years ago the Barley Mow suddenly shut up shop - so quickly in fact, pint glasses were still left on the bar. So imagine our surprise to discover it had reopened, with little change to the rare interior. Built in 1791, it claims to be the oldest pub in Marylebone and is indeed a very attractive property, decorated with hanging baskets and gas lanterns. Stepping inside, you are greeted by a handsome bar with two very rare snugs. Don't expect grand Victorian opulence here though - just simple functionality and two wooden cubicles. These days, the small space means that it can get packed at the usual times, so you're likely to appreciate the surroundings more if you can visit at a quiet time. To quench your thirst, there's a decent selection of ale, with the Butcombe Bitter we tried in good nick. Overall, a welcome return to a rather decent little boozer.

Pleasantly surprised to hear about the re-opening, we visited on a Saturday night. Disappointingly, the pub was fairly empty, but the few people there all seemed up for a good time. There was a nice atmosphere, helped by a couple of lively bar staff, by a good mix of music played behind the bar, and by a stunning blonde customer who was a real party animal. More importantly(?), the bitter and lager were good and well served, and were reasonably priced (for the area). We will definitely be back for a return visit.
