Birdcage, Shoreditch
FancyaPint?'s review...
Amongst the trendiness of Columbia Road's restaurants, boutiques and bars, The Birdcage is a stalwart of the traditional East End pub. Even its name is appropriate for the area - the Huguenot immigrants who moved into the Bethnal Green during the 18th century had a fascination for caged song birds. Anyway, the outside features some attractive original green tiling, while the inside is pretty nice too, with a gantried bar and a homely feel - all helped by attentive service and cheerful locals. There's plenty of lively entertainment on offer in the evenings, ranging from karaoke to Country and Western evenings, during which it was great to see people really getting into the spirit of things. The Birdcage is certainly worth a visit if you're in the area and although the trendy Hoxton crew are beginning to discover it, it is still a great place to go if you have a hankering for more down-to-earth establishments.

How to find the Birdcage pub
Not very close to any station, its in the middle of the flower Market on Columbia Road. From Cambridge Heath station, turn left onto Hackney Road and turn down Ravenscroft Street, which is approx the 10th turning on the left. The Birdcage is at the end on the right. The 26 and 48 buses from Liverpool Street go along Hackney Road and pass the top of Ravenscroft Street. The 55 does the same from Old Street.
