This imposing local's pub hasn't really changed much since we started going here almost a decade ago, which is no bad thing. Made up of a large public bar and a smaller room at the front with a pool table, it's a decent pub. It still sells "Rita's Special", a bitter named after a previous landlady, apparently, as well as a rotating line-up of guest beers which don't stick around very long. The local darts team meets here, as evidenced by the trophies in the cabinet over the door to the front bar. One of the dart boards is placed near the doorway to the large, kid-friendly, beer garden, and requires good timing to get outside if there's a game on. Populated by friendly locals and genial bar staff, it's got a lot going for it. Now, if they only did Sunday lunch...

Fantastic local pub. After a small panic and campaign to save the pub, it wasn't just saved but also got Les and Jan, who actually know how to run a pub. The place has always had good music, beer and the best beer garden in Waltham Forest, but now it has people who drink there too and has come alive.

My wife, daughter and I regularly go to the Birkbeck and it always feels welcoming, just like a local should. After moving from the pub dead zone that Homerton was two years ago, the Birkbeck was a great find.

As noted a decent pub - Always a selection of beer but could probably be kept slightly better - but generally ok

Great for a pre match pint before the Os -- always friendly

Quality of beer is a bit patchy. Handy for the tube station.

From Leyton tube station turn left down the hill and take the first left into Calderon Road. Follow the road round until it joins Frith Road and turn left. The pub is straight ahead, across Langthorne Road, on the opposite corner.
