Zut alors! A pub with French leanings where you can (just about) see the river. This part of the Thames has quite a plethora of pubs and on hot sunny days the inhabitants of Hammersmith and Chiswick swarm here en masse. The tendency is to get as close to the river as possible, but if you're willing to forego a waterside view, you'll find the Black Lion offers the most pleasant pub-going experience in these parts. It's a large pub that's been here for a couple of hundred years or so and consequently has the olde worlde low ceilings, exposed beams, bare floorboards etc that perfectly fits our traditional image of a British pub. Like many other pubs nowadays, there's a strong focus on dining, including a barbecue in the huge beer garden when the weather's nice (hard to resist when you're walking past), but that doesn't mean that the beer's been neglected. There's an excellent and varied selection of real ales on the hand pumps as well as all the other wines and spirits you'd expect of a modern gastropub. Kid-friendly, dog-friendly and with lots of activities, from French movie nights, a regular quiz and live music, this pub has something for everyone and, apart from the times there are so many people that the service is rather slow, the Black Lion offers a relaxed and friendly experience.

The Black Lion is a lovely pub but the arrival of l'Auberge has spoiled it's historic charm. Sadly the French staff are slow, arrogant and openly rude to/about their customers both in English and French (when they think we might not understand what they are saying).

It's time the management scrapped this overpriced restaurant chain (the house wine in the restaurant is much more expensive than the house wine in the pub and, as it has it's own label, you've got no idea what's in the bottle...) and return the pub to doing what it does best - serving proper pub food and decent beer at sensible prices.

Three of us attempted to eat outside in the courtyard area on Saturday night. The food took 50 minutes to arrive with the pathetic excuse that “the waitress should have informed you of the delay because we are busy” which they clearly were not, and which the waitress didn’t of course. We got a dry, unseasoned and overcooked piece of chicken on some lumpy potato mash with what was supposed to be a mushroom sauce except it had no mushrooms and could barely be called a sauce. The waiter was nice and clearly embarrassed and didn’t charge us. The management, on the other hand, is a joke. This is the most appalling eating experience I’ve ever had in 20 years of eating good food by the river in Chicwick. I can hardly believe it actually happened.

Finally got to our 5th and final pub, the Black Lion, and wow, what a great pub. Nicely furnished, a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and a good range of fairly priced drinks. Judging from the in-house advertising the management seem determined to create a busy environment with lots of interesting themed days. If I lived closer I'd make it my local in an instant.
