Calthorpe Arms, Gray's Inn Road
FancyaPint?'s review...
The Calthorpe Arms is a Young's pub of the old school. It's a fairly quiet place, not far from Kings Cross, with a local crowd enjoying its traditional atmosphere. A nice pint of Special is to be had (most of the Young's range is usually on offer) and there's food all day too. It's very reasonably priced, traditional pub grub, including a hearty Sunday roast. There's an upstairs bar which is available for hire and the service is friendly and fast - it's most thing you would want it a stand-up local boozer. Nowadays, the decor is beginning to look more than a little frayed around the edges , to us, it looks like the Calthorpe is due for a refurb (or at least redecoration). We just hope that someone doesn't take it into his or her head doesn't take this opportunity to 'improve' too much.

This was an unexpected find and a lovely treat on the way to Kings Cross after a weekend in London. The pub's decor is lived in, but it feels cosy rather than tatty. The menu consists of a chalkboard on the wall, but you get plenty of food and it's proper dinner like your mum makes, none of this gastro nonsense with "jus" instead of gravy. It's also amazing value - I wouldn't expect to get a sunday dinner for less than £6 outside of a wetherspoons so very, very impressed!
All in all, felt like a proper local, with brilliant food and great prices. I'm going again next time I'm in town.
